Named Variety’s Showman of the Year in 2011, Ryan Kavanaugh has established himself as a leading Hollywood film and television executive. He is the co-chairman and co-chief executive officer of Relativity, a next-generation studio involved in film, television, and digital media. Ryan Kavanaugh has leveraged his knowledge of finance to distribute, produce, and structure financing for over 200 motion pictures. Films produced by Relativity have grossed more than $17 billion worldwide and secured 60 Oscar nominations.
In 2009, Kavanaugh was the subject of a special issue of Variety dedicated exclusively to him and his work as a “Billion Dollar Producer.” He first established himself in the entertainment industry by organizing slate financing arrangements for Sony, Universal, Warner Bros., and other major studios, bringing more than $10 billion in capital to the industry as a whole. During his early years with Relativity, he was instrumental in the acquisition of marketing and distribution operations from Overture Films, as well as the studio’s expansion into China. He also negotiated a groundbreaking television deal with Netflix, further bolstering the Relativity distribution network.
Outside of his work in film and television, Ryan Kavanaugh remains dedicated to philanthropy. Together with his wife, he contributes to the Kavanaugh Family Foundation, which focuses on issues such as protecting and rescuing animals, combating anti-Semitism, helping children in need, financing medical research, and advocating for education. He is chairman emeritus of The Art of Elysium, a charitable organization that encourages artists to share their work with children undergoing treatment for serious medical conditions. The recipient of the Tom Sherak Award from the Fulfillment Fund, he was also named the Hollywood Humanitarian of the Year by the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center Board of Governors.
